As a dental student, why consider disability insurance if I have CDSPI coverage?

Review what your existing CDSPI or other student coverage includes before adding a policy. A modest amount of disability coverage during your school years may help you plan for future income protection as your career develops.

Some policies offer a future increase or insurability option that may allow additional coverage without new medical evidence. That depends on the rider, eligibility, financial evidence, timing and policy limits; it is not an unconditional guarantee of coverage for a particular income. Ask our team to compare your current protection and future increase options.

Do I need personal life insurance if I am covered at work?

Employer group life insurance is convenient, but it may fall short of your family’s needs. If your employment ends, your coverage may end or leave a gap between jobs. Check any continuation or conversion options in your group plan.

Consider whether the group benefit is enough for your spouse, other dependants, debts and future commitments. Our team can review your existing coverage with you and discuss whether personal insurance would help address a gap.

What should I consider before buying insurance?

Financial security means something different to each person. Start with the amount your family would need if something happened to you:

  • Your current debts, including your mortgage.
  • Expenses your family would pay after your death.
  • Future needs such as childcare, education and ongoing income.

Then account for existing savings, coverage and other resources. Salary multiples can be a rough starting point, but a personal needs assessment is more useful than treating the same multiplier as a rule for every family. Once you understand the amount and purpose of coverage, compare providers and make sure you understand the policy options and terms.

Why might I need life insurance?

If you are your family’s primary wage earner, life insurance can help provide financial support after your death. If you are not the primary earner, your household may still face childcare costs, funeral expenses and other costs of replacing the support you provide.

A death benefit can help with:

  • Unpaid medical bills.
  • Income replacement for survivors.
  • Final expenses, including burial costs.
  • Unplanned or emergency expenses.
  • Your mortgage balance.
  • Future education funds for children.

Some life insurance products may also play a role in estate planning, tax-advantaged savings, retirement income or funding an estate’s tax liabilities. Those uses depend on the policy, its costs and your circumstances; discuss the details with the appropriate insurance, tax and legal professionals.
